At 8:00 AM on Sunday, May 18, 1947, WLIP signed on the air from the basement of the Kenosha National Bank Building at Seventh Avenue and 57th Street in downtown Kenosha, licensed as a daytime-only station. In 1975, WLIP built and opened its new studios at 8500 Green Bay Road.

In the 1980s, the Federal Communications Commission granted WLIP permission to broadcast on a 24-hour-a-day basis.

On May 18, 2007, WLIP celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special broadcast from the Kenosha National Bank Building where it had its first broadcast on Mother's Day, May 18, 1947.

Programming

WLIP is an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network; former network affiliations have included the Mutual Broadcasting System, the ABC Radio Network, AP (mid 90s), Wisconsin Radio Network and CNN (2000-2003).

WLIP weekday programming today features a variety of talk shows between 5 AM CDT and 12 midnight, beginning with the local morning shows ("The Wakeup Call" with Bill Lawrence), "The Lenny Palmer Show" with Lenny Palmer (replayed as the "Lenny Palmer Playback" each evening), and the nostalgia-based "Remembering Kenosha" call-in program with Lou Rugani. The entertainment-based "Happenings Q & A" with Frank Carmichael and then "The Doctor Laura Show" with Dr. Laura Schlesinger airs followed by the hour-long "K-Town Report" news program with Lars Christiansen and Katie Dylan. "The Jim Bohannon Show" airs nights and overnights airs the "Good-Time Rock and Roll" music format.

Weekend programming is varied, including local oldies show ("Rock & Roll Never Forgets" with Terry Havel) on Saturday evenings. The longtime "Music Of The Stars" (since 1992) with host Lou Rugani airs Sunday mornings. On Sunday afternoons, the two-hour "Doo-Wop Diner" with Ramundo airs. On Sunday evenings, "The Mothership Connection", a program dealing with the supernormal, airs with hosts Dobie Maxwell and Stu James plus guests.

"Stateline Spotlight" with Tim Allen airing many weekdays. Various local talk shows air Saturday mornings.

Irene Buri-Nelson, of the show Around Town with Irene Buri-Nelson, on the air over WLIP for 59 years, died in a car accident on Friday, July 7, 2006. She had worked at the station for 60 years since its beginning in 1947.
