About Colombian Soap Operas

The mentioned below are soap operas have had a great impact on Colombian television audiences.

'Café, con Aroma de Mujer' (1994-1995)

Probably one of the most popular TV shows in Colombian television. It marked a difference in Latin American soap opera and the way they were created. The story involved both typical and modern parts of Colombia, taking place in the heart of Colombian coffee plantations and in an important coffee export company. In a short time, "Café" became popular among an audience of all ages. The main actress, Margarita Rosa de Francisco; already popular for her former roles in "Gallito Ramirez" and "Escalona", gave life to "Gaviota", one of the most popular characters in Colombian Television and Margarita's most important work.

'Betty La Fea'

: "Main article: Betty La Fea"

Even more popular than "Café", Betty La Fea is among the most watched TV shows in Colombian Television. It's success in Colombia and in other countries have been greater than any other Colombian TV Show shown outside the country. ABC, Televisa and Sony Entertainment Television in India have done their versions of Betty La Fea, all popular among their viewers. The Story is about a girl who was socially tortured because of her appearance, then meeting her boss in her new job. This isn't how most soap operas are made and this story, marked a difference in how Latin American soap operas were made, a bigger difference than the one "Cafe" made before.

'Pasión de Gavilanes'

: "Main article: Pasion de Gavilanes"

The second biggest co-production between a Colombian network, Canal Caracol and the Miami based channel, Telemundo (NBC) proved a worldwide success, specially in Spain where it became popular giving it's cast fame of stars, something new for Latin American actors.Even though the main scenaries where unconfusingly Colombian, the story didn't directly imply this fact since the main intention of both American and Colombian producers was to achieve a "neutral product" to appeal international audiences. This is strongly argued by many Colombian detractors who claim that Pasión de Gavilanes is actually directly aimed at the Mexican community in the United States. Thus, 'Pasión' had touches of Mexican culture and it involved international actors, not only Colombian ones, which made international viewers feel more identified with the plot.
