It was created onJanuary 1 ,1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat is the town ofStrzelce Krajeńskie , which lies convert|25|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east ofGorzów Wielkopolski and convert|104|km|mi|0|abbr=on north ofZielona Góra . The county also contains the towns ofDrezdenko , lying convert|21|km|mi|0|abbr=on east of Strzelce Krajeńskie, andDobiegniew , convert|18|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east of Strzelce Krajeńskie.The county covers an area of convert|1248.32|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 50,151, out of which the population of Drezdenko is 10,332, that of Strzelce Krajeńskie is 10,143, that of Dobiegniew is 3,187, and the rural population is 26,489.
