The Roman Catholic Diocese of Subotica

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Subotica is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Vojvodina, Serbia. It is centred in the city of Subotica. It was erected as Apostolic Administration for Yugoslav Bačka in 1923 and elevated to a diocese in 1968.

The diocese's cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Teresa of Avila in Subotica, dating back to 1779. János Pénzes currently serves as bishop. The diocese is multiethnic and has members primarily from the large Hungarian and Croat community, among others. Before the end of World War II, there was also a large number of Germans on the area of this Diocese. From the middle 1980's, and especially during 1990's this diocese lost a lot of its members, especially Croats, because of pressure of Serb extremists[citation needed].

The diocese runs the only Catholic high school in the country, the Paulinum gymnasium. Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified Petković solicited for help in this Diocese and founded children's homes (for poor and abandoned children) and monasteries of her Order, Order of Daughters of Mercy.
