Ryde Transport Interchange

Ryde Transport Interchange

Ryde Transport Interchange consists of Ryde Esplanade railway station on the Island Line, the connected Bus Station and Taxi Ranks, and the nearby Hoverport. The existing facilities are due to be rebuilt [http://www.rydeinterchange.com/ Ryde Interchange, Isle of Wight ] ] from October 2007. However, as of August 2008, this may now not occur. cite web |url= http://www.iwcp.co.uk/News/Interchange_plan_in_balance_amid_price_hikes.aspx|title= Isle of Wight: Ryde Interchange funding|accessdate=2008-08-08 |work= |publisher= Isle of Wight County Press group|date= 2008-08-08]

Ryde Esplanade railway station

Ryde bus station

Ryde bus station is located on the railway station forecourt, and it forms the only purpose-built bus/rail interchange on the Island. The bus station is jointly owned by the Isle of Wight Council and Network Rail, [cite web |url=http://www.rydeinterchange.com/background.aspx |title=Ryde Interchange (Background) |accessdate=2008-06-04 |publisher= |date= ] and Southern Vectis are the main provider of services, although other operators such as Wightbus do use the facility. In December 2007, Southern Vectis moved staff facilities and passenger information out of the station to the Esplanade. This is where the buses will stop while the interchange is being rebuilt, however this was later removed and buses remained using the main bus station when work was put on hold.

Bus Routes

The following buses run from Ryde Bus Station. All services, unless noted, are run by Southern Vectis.

This is from the summer timetable revision of the 20 April 2008. [cite web |url=http://www.islandbuses.info/pdfs/times200408.pdf |title=Southern Vectis - Summer bus timetable |accessdate=2008-06-04 |publisher=Southern Vectis |date= ]

Other transport links

Also adjacent to the station is the Hovertravel hovercraft terminal, although at present the connection involves a footbridge over the railway. There are also taxi ranks outside the Bus Station. The entire interchange complex is due to be rebuilt, starting in 2008. This is in order to upgrade the facilities and replace some of the existing ageing buildings. However, since the original proposals were accepted, construction prices have risen, meaning that the plans may be shelved or scaled down if additional funds cannot be raised.
