Benji has become stranded in a remote island during a boating accident. He finds himself struggling to survive, avoiding close encounters with a wolf, a bear, a human hunter who catches him trying to steal his meat, and a territorial femalecougar with her kitten.He eventually encounters four orphaned
cougar kittens, which he takes care of. A wolf pursuing the kittens and, perhaps Benji, is one of the main highlights of the film. In one of the film's more tragic scenes, one of the kittens gets carried off by an eagle.Benji later tries to catch up with the female cougar he encountered earlier with the intention of leaving the three remaining kittens in her care.
