The Treaty of Peace with Italy was a treaty signed in
Paris onFebruary 10 ,1947 , between the Italian Republic ("Repubblica Italiana") and the victorious powers ofWorld War II , formally ending the hostilities. * Transfer of the Adriatic islands of Cherso/Cres, Lussino/Lošinj, Lagosta/Lastovo and Pelagosa/Palagruža; ofIstria south of the river Quieto/Mirna; of the city of Fiume/Rijeka and what is now westernSlovenia (west of theBlack Sea - Adriatic watershed) to theSocialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ;
* Transfer of theDodecanese islands toGreece ;
* Transfer toFrance of Briga and Tenda, and minor revisions of the Franco-Italian border;
* Recognition of the independence ofAlbania and transfer to Albania of the island ofSaseno ;
* Recognition of the independence ofEthiopia
* Renouncement of claims to colonies (includingLibya ,Eritrea , andItalian Somaliland );
* Cancellation of favourable commercial treaties with theRepublic of China (including cessation of the Concession in Tientsin held by the Kingdom of Italy sinceSeptember 7 ,1901 )Trieste and the surrounding area were incorporated into a new independent state called theFree Territory of Trieste . In1954 , the Free Territory of Trieste ceased to exist and Trieste and the surrounding area was divided between Yugoslavia and Italy. The city of Trieste itself became part of Italy.On
December 24 ,1951 , Libya declared its independence as theUnited Kingdom of Libya .After a
United Nations plebiscite, Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia as was stipulated onDecember 2 ,1950 . Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia "de facto" onMay 24 ,1991 , and "de jure" onMay 24 ,1993 .Italian Somaliland was under British administration until 1949 when it became a
United Nations Trust Territory under Italian administration. Italian Somaliland combined withBritish Somaliland onJuly 1 ,1960 , and together they became the Somali Republic.A subsequent annex to the treaty provided for the cultural autonomy of the German minority in the
