Yancy Victoria Butler (born July 2, 1970 in Greenwich Village, New York City) is an American television and movie actress. She is the daughter of Joe Butler, drummer for the sixties rock group The Lovin' Spoonful.

Biography

Early life

After growing up in Greenwich Village, New York City, she went on to study at Sarah Lawrence College in 1987, where she majored in liberal arts.

Career

* Butler's first major role was in the television series "Mann & Machine" in 1992, in which she played an android police officer partnered with a human detective. The series was set in Los Angeles in the near future. The series was co-created by Dick Wolf, of "Law & Order" fame. A year later, she starred in her second series, "South Beach" also for Dick Wolf, in which she played a con artist and thief who made a deal with the federal government: in exchange for their wiping of her criminal record, she performs certain tasks for them. Seven episodes of this series were produced, but only six were broadcasted.

* Butler's first film appearance, which she also starred in, was John Woo's 1993 film, "Hard Target", featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. She then starred in the 1994 film "Drop Zone", featuring Wesley Snipes. In 1995, she starred as Corinne the dancer in the film "Let It Be Me". Butler then starred in the television series "Brooklyn South" which ran for a full season in 1997–1998, totaling twenty two episodes, each of which she appeared in.

* Butler starred in the television series "Witchblade", based on an adaptation from the comic book (also titled "Witchblade"), which ran for two seasons on the Turner Network Television network (TNT) for a total of 23 episodes. The series had a "cult television" following, and was ranked seventh in the Top 10 Basic Cable Dramas for 2002 (Multichannel News, February 24, 2003). Personal life

Fourteen months after the cancellation of the Witchblade series, Butler was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication. She was ordered to enter rehabilitation at the Renaissance Institute in Boca Raton by a South Florida court.cite web

On February 11, 2007, Butler was arrested in her home on the charge of disorderly conduct. Butler had called police to her home to complain that her current boyfriend would not give her the keys to her car or let her leave. Her boyfriend told police that she had been drinking and doing drugs and he did not want her driving. She also allegedly threw things at him because he would not let her leave. Butler was released on $500 bail and ordered by a judge to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings seven times a week until her next court appearance on March 8, 2007.
