This thoroughbred's time was 1:59.97 for 1¼ miles. This is the second-fastest winning time in the race's history, behind 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who ran 1:59 2⁄5 (at that time, the Derby was timed to the fifth of a second rather than to the hundredth of a second). Monarchos' time converts to 1:59 4⁄5, and Sham, who finished second to Secretariat, was beaten 2½ lengths and thus may have run either faster or slower than Monarchos.
In 10 starts, Monarchos won 4 races, placed once, and showed three times. He failed to place in the top three in the Preakness Stakes, and showed in the Belmont Stakes.
Breeder Jim Squires has written an entertaining account of this "rags to riches" win, entitled "Horse of a Different Colour."
Monarchos was sired by Maria's Mon, and his dam was Regal Band. In 2007, he stood at stud at Claiborne Farm, where he earned US$7,500 for a single live cover breeding. He will stand the 2011 breeding season at Nuckols Farm in Midway, Kentucky, for $6,000. In his first set of foals, he produced five winning Thoroughbreds, but only one, Harborage, has raced in a Stakes race. He showed at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Championships. He also has sired a winner of the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and multiple graded stakes winner, Informed Decision, and winner of the Rebel Stakes and one time Kentucky Derby contender, Win Willy.
