Springfield Local High School is located in Holland, Ohio. It has an enrollment of 1200 students in grades 9-12. Locally it is known as Springfield High School. The students is serves come from Holland, Toledo, and most of Springfield Township.

Early history

Springfield High School was organized in 1898 as Springfield Township High School. This was theresult of the Springfield Township Board of Education consolidating the old one-room schools. The high school was built in Holland, Ohio, where the current Holland Elementary stands. It was expanded once in 1921. Both sections of the original building have been razed, with the 1921 section most recently in 2005.

Springfield High School

In the mid 1930s, a new high school was built across the street. The old building was to be Holland Elementary. The school district changed its name to Springfield Local Schools (SLS) and the name of the high school was changed to Holland High School. While HHS, the school's athletic teams were nicknamed the "Zippers" and the school colors were blue and gold.

Holland High School was short-lived. In 1957, SLS decided to expand the high school - not only for classroom space, but because the school lacked both a cafeteria and gym. The new section opened for the 1959-1960 school year. That same year the school's name changed again to Springfield Local High School. The mascot became the Blue Devil and the school colors became blue and white, as they remain to this day. The Blue Devil mascot has become quite controversial because of the interpreted meaning. The mascot itself is not modeled after an actual blue devil, which happens to be the mascot today, but was originally intended to be modeled after a World War II plane called "The Blue Devil" which was owned and flown by a local man from Holland.

They are charter members of the Northern Lakes League (1956).

Blue Devils Band

The Springfield Blue Devil Band and Color Guard is the name of the marching band of Springfield High School (SHS). Conducted by Ms. Kathleen McGrady and Mr. Travis Pennell with the Color Guard directed by Ms. Jackie Sartor, the Blue Devil Marching Band is considered the pride of SHS and the Springfield Township Community.

Current building

In 1967, SHS moved again to its current location at 1470 S. McCord in Holland. This location sits behind the old building. When the new building first opened it housed only grades 10-12.

In 1974, the building was expanded and welcomed the ninth grade. The building has been expanded two more times, once in 1988 and again in 1993. The 1993 expansion included a new media center, 12 classrooms, a section where the school can be expanded to a second floor, and a new gym called the field house.

In 1984 Springfield High School established Army JROTC. It is the only one in the area and one of only six in the State of Ohio. It is most noted for its outstanding drill team, which has received numerous awards, and attended several national competitions over the past several years.

Middle school

Springfield Middle School was organized in 1967 as Springfield Junior High School with students in grades 7-9. The Junior High occupied the former high school. Until 1967 grade 7-8 were in the elementary schools and grade 9 was part of the high school. It remained this way until 1974 when SHS was expanded and grade 9 was moved to high school.

In 1988, SJHS was expanded and connected to Holland Elementary. In the early 1990s with enrollment increasing and nowhere to expand current buildings, it was decided to split Holland Elementary into two schools and make SJHS a middle school. Since Holland was losing half of its enrollment and one whole grade, SJHS took over a portion of the school. The 1994-1995 school year was the first year the junior high included grade 6 and officially became Springfield Middle School.

Like SHS, the middle school's colors are blue and white and the mascot is the Blue Devil. While a junior high, it ran like a high school until 1991. In 1991 the school slowly started to run more like a middle school with teachers teaching in teams.

Elementary schools

SLS currently operates four elementary schools: Crissey, Dorr, Holland and Holloway.Crissey, Dorr and Holland all housed grades K-8 until 1967 and grades K-6 until 1994. They now house grade K-5. Holloway was built to split Holland (which had an enrollment of 1000+ in 1992, while Crissey and Dorr had about 500) in 1993. Due to levy issues, it did not open until the 1994-1995 school year. It was built to house grades K-5.
