* 590, Pope Gregory I succeeds Pope Pelagius II as the 64th pope.
* Pope Gregory I sends a mission led by Augustine of Canterbury, consisting of forty monks, to England with the intent of converting its inhabitants to Christianity. On their arrival in 597, they are welcomed by King Ethelbert of Kent, who eventually converts.
