The Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) is one of the numerous specialised 'cities-within-a-city' in Dubai targeted at the healthcare and the pharmaceutical industries. Owned and developed by Dubai Holding under its subsidiary Tatweer, this US $ 1.8 billion development consists of a collection of medical teaching institutions, private hospitals and clinics, pharmaceutical offices and research centres, and spas and rehabilitation centres. It also includes some residential villas, apartments, and 5-star hotels surrounding an artificial lake, and is designed to promote medical tourism.

DHCC is situated on the Oud Metha Road in Dubai, adjacent to the creek and in close proximity to Al Wasl Hospital, and Wafi City. It will have its own Dubai Metro station on the Green Line by early 2010.

Overall, there are 17 hospitals planned for DHCC with a total of 780 beds to be available by the end of 2008. By speciality categorization, hospitals proposed/under construction include:

*Plastic Surgery Hospital I (25 beds)
*Plastic Surgery Hospital II (25 beds)
*Orthopaedic Hospital (20 beds)
*Urology Hospital (30 beds)
*General Hospital I - Cardiology
*General Hospital II - Obstetrics
*General Hospital III (150 beds)
*University Hospital (400 beds)
*Sports Medicine Hospital (100 beds)
*Rehabilitation Hospital (300 beds)
*Long-Term Care Facility (100 beds)
*Nursing Home (50 beds)

The teaching hospital and post-graduate medical training centre is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The academic centre will have a Life Sciences research centre, a 300-seat auditorium, and the Al Maktoum Medical Library, which promises to have the most comprehensive medical reference collection in the country. Applicants for the post-graduate training programme are sent to Boston for the time being. The University Hospital is expected to be ready by the end of 2008. A nursing school will accommodate 200 students, offering basic and masters level training.

DHCC is currently partially functional, with a staff of 760+, including 130+ physicians. Phase I&II are under construction, and it is expected that it will be fully operational by 2010.

Maintaining quality and governance in DHCC

Currently hospitals in Dubai are looking towards American-sourced international healthcare accreditation through the US-based JCI.

In view of the very large number of British and Europeans living, working and buying property within Dubai, Dubai-based hospitals may in time look towards involving other accreditation schemes based elsewhere in the world, such as the ACHSI of Australia and the British Trent Accreditation Scheme. Already, many doctors in Dubai and the Middle East choose to advance their specialist training credentials through their taking the postgraduate examinations of the British Royal Colleges, such as the MRCP(UK) (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians), which is hosted in Dubai, or the MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons).
