History
During the later part of British India, it was felt that the people of the northeastern region needed the services of qualified medical personnel. The then Campbell Medical School of Calcutta and Mitford Medical School of Dhaka were unable to cater the needs of the growing population. With this background the third medical school for the region, was established in 1924 in Mymensingh, by the Earl of Lytton, the then governor of Bengal. The Lytton Medical School was to run a four-year course of Licentiate of Medical Faculty (LMF). This course of LMF continued till 1962, when it was upgraded to a five-year undergraduate medical course under Dhaka University and the school was renamed as Mymensingh Medical College.

Mymensingh Medical Journal was indexed in Index Medicus, MEDLINE and Pub Med and began to be available online throughout the world 2003 Internet was introduced and whole college came under a local computer network Admission

- For Bangladeshi students: Admission test is conducted centrally by Director of Medical Education under DGHS. Admission consists of written MCQ. Well advertised in the daily newspapers, Usually starting from late september
- For foreign students: Admission is through Embassy of Bangladesh in respective countries.
Academic calendar for different years is maintained by respective departments.

Administration
*General: Mymensingh Medical College is a Government Medical College which administered by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Principal is the Executive head of the college. He communicated and implemented all the regulations of the administrative authorities.
*Academic Council: Academic Council is the highest body of the college. Principal, Mymensingh Medical College is the Chairman and Director, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital is Ex-Officio-Member of the Academic Council. The Head of Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics and all other full Professors, two senior-most Associate Professors, two senior-most Assistant Professors and two nominated representatives of students union are the members of the Council. This body also monitors and maintains control of the campus in order to ensure a smooth progress of the academic activities. It also refers the disciplinary matters to the Disciplinary Committee to take actions against those who violate any rule or regulation of the college.
*Disciplinary Committee: Chaired by the Principal the committee consists of the Director of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and all full Professors of the college to deal with all Disciplinary matters referred by the Academic Council.
*College Council: All teachers are the members of College Council. This Council discusses the matters of bigger interest and can refer any matter to the academic Council for consideration.
*Quality Assurance Body (QAB): A local Quality Assurance Body (QAB) is working to achieve the following objectives: a. Preparation & implementation of academic calendar b. Monitoring of teaching activities c. Critical review d. Staff development e. External Assessors f. Quality audit g. Preparation of Annual Report.
This is one of the active bodies aimed at controlling the quality of teaching to produce quality doctors of the community. It tries to ensure a coordinated effort between the teachers and the students of the college. Regular seminars and workshop are arranged to promote its activities. There is one subject coordinator in each subject who prepares the study program in respective subject.
There are three phase co-coordinators who co-ordinates the programs of different departments of the same phase. As a result of these activities, the academic calendar runs smoothly. An Academic coordinator organizes and co-ordinates all the activities of the whole body. Vice Principal of the College is the Chairman of QAB.
*Others: *Medical Education Unit (MEU): The teachers of the college can enjoy the facilities of the Medical Education Unit. Seminars and work are arranged regularly which enable them to exchange views with the colleagues of other disciplines. They can also use the media production facility equipped with computers, slide maker etc, The internet access facilities are also available to an intending browser. The teachers are much benefited from the activities of the unit by learning new teaching and assessment methods. It is run by a Committee.
The seminar hall and the medical skill room situated also in the college building to aid in teaching in a more effective way.
*Students’ Union: The Mymensingh Medical College Students’ Union is an elected body of the students of the college. All the students elect the member representative bodies by voting. Medical College Students’ Union deals with the matters related to welfare of the students in both their academic progress as well as their life in the campus. They organize co-curricular and extra-curricular programs throughout the year. Literary, cultural, games and sports competition arranged by them bring welcome relief to the otherwise strenuous study schedules.
*Hostel Committee: One Super, two Assistant Super, two Office Assistant used to supervise smooth functioning of the hostels.

The hospital has the following departments: Anaesthesiology, Transfusion Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, ENT, Endocrine Medicine, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Gastrointestinal & Liver Disease,Infectious Disease Hospital, Microbiology, Medicine, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Neuromedicine, Nuclear Medicine, Ophthalmology, Ortho-surgery, Physiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Physical Medicine, Paediatric Surgery, Radiotherapy, Radiology and Imaging, Respiratory Medicine, Surgery, Urology. Recently a multi-story Building is under construction.
The academic building consists of the following departments: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology & a well organized undergraduate library.
The campus also houses a post-graduation library and a modern auditorium, a branch of Janata bank. & hospital mosque.

Facilities
*Library:
The MBBS library is located in the western block of the college building. It consists of a reference for the use of the faculty and doctors. International medical journals are regularly being received through donations from the British Council, the Asia Foundation, WHO and other place.
There are two reading rooms with an accommodation of about 150 students. They can borrow text and other books to read on the reading room of the library as well on a take home basis for a limited period. This provides an excellent opportunity for the students to access to modern medical text books of their own liking. The college library has a collection of over 25000 volumes of text books – about 2000 titles. Besides, there is a collection of about 1000 slides used as teaching aid by the teachers.
*Library Services:
· Library working hours: During morning shift from 9 am to 2.00 pm and day shift from 2.00 pm to 9.00 pm
· Our library is meant only for reference sake and the staff members alone can get the loan facilities for the publication purposes.
· Inter-Library loan facilities are also offered.
· Medline Database (Abstracting Services)
*Bank:
A branch of Agranee Bank shares it’s banking services with the college, being just besides the college building. The Post Office (Sub Branch) is also in the campus.
*Ethical Committee:
This committee guides investigations / researchers in the ethical aspects of the research programmes. Funds by the Governmental agencies and publications in professional journals necessitates the project to get an approval from this committee.
*Research:
Research is being carried out in all departments, both in the Pre clinical and Para clinical. The teachers are actively involved in Clinical and Research activities, including publication of papers in reputed professional journals.
*Medical Skill Centre:
The centre is located at the 2nd floor of the College in the Department of Physiology. It offers excellent facilities to the students to practice skills on different clinical activities. Tastefully decorated and richly equipped, this centre is a pride addition to the repertoire of the teachers to the teachers to impart effective practical teaching to their students.
*Postgraduate training programs:
The rich infrastructure and modern clinical training facilities existing in the hospital has earned recognition for the trainees aspiring to enter into postgraduate courses. The patients are also used as teaching subjects for students and trainee doctors.
*Autopsy facilities:
Due to religious traditions, autopsies are not carried out routinely in all hospital deaths. Only the medicolegal autopsies are performed by the department of forensic medicine with the help of the department of pathology whenever needed. A student has to attend at least 10 autopsies under supervision of a teacher during the period of second professional MBBS study.
*BMDC Registration:
BMDC Registration is a mandatory pre-requisite for all types of practice, job and profession. Both after Graduation and Post Graduation all the Doctors must register him/her-self in BMDC. Practice without registration is punishable as per law.
*Accommodation:
The College is not bound to provide hostel accommodation to all students. However, it may offer this facility to the deserving and soliciting students on first come first serve basis. The priorities are based on students from outside the city, academic merit, regularity in study, good conduct etc. Application needs to be made after admission. Rules and regulations are maintained strictly and defaulting may result in serious disciplinary action by the college authority, including cancellation of the seat or other penalties. The allotted students must keep allotment letter with them in the hostel, otherwise law enforcing agency can be active. There are two separate hostels for Boys and Ladies. The Boy's Hotel is outside of the campus although the Ladies Hotel is in the college campus. Tntern doctor's hostel & nurses hostels are located on campus as well.
*Masjid:
There is a Hostel Mosque in the Male Hostel and a central Mosque annexed to the Hospital and the college. Religious festivals of all the religions are celebrated with much zeal and fervour within the campus.
*Auditorium:
The Auditorium has all the infrastructures and facilities of a modern auditorium like air conditioning, comfortable 1000 seats, large stage, lighting and sound system. It is the hub of all the cultural activities and competitions of the campus for both students and teachers alike. Culture, Literary, Social welfare and other Departments of the Students' Union organize literary, social and cultural programs frequently. The esteemed auditorium wears up a festive look during the annual literary and cultural competitions of the students.
*Extra-curricular Activities:
The hospital complex houses the following clubs: 1. Sandhani Club(has blood bank) 2. Medicine club 3. Leo Club
*Catering:
A well furnished Doctors club offering refreshments is located at the hospital complex.
