- Insein Township
Insein is a township located north of
Yangon , in southernBurma . It is home to one of Burma's most infamousprison s ("Insein Prison " coord|16.892715|96.097986), built by the British, which houses thousands ofpolitical prisoner s. Insein also contains a largemarble Buddha image, called the "Chaukdawgyi Paya" ("Lawka Chantha Abaya Laba Muni Buddha"), which was brought from upper Myanmar under the direction ofKhin Nyunt . It was also taken by the Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) on 31 January 1949, initiating the rebellion of the Karen against the Burmese government.External links
