Lycian: Khbide;Ancient Greek : Polytonic|Καῦνος; Latin: Caunus) was a city of ancientCaria ,Anatolia , a few km west of the modern town ofDalyan ,Muğla Province ,Turkey . Kaunos was said to have been founded by Kaunos, son ofMiletos and Kyane, on the southern coast of Caria, oppositeRhodes . It was in a district later under the jurisdiction of Rhodes known as Peraea, Peræa Rhodiorum (Latin form) "the Rhodian Shore", at the foot of MountTarbelos . Itsacropolis was called "Imbros". It exported, chiefly toRome , highly prized figs. It was the home of the painterProtogenes . It was a member of theChrysaorian League .The ruins of the city are near

Christianized early, andbishop s are known beginning from the4th century . Four bishops are mentioned byLequien (I, 981): Basil, who attended theCouncil of Seleucia in359 ; Antipater, who attended theCouncil of Chalcedon in451 ; Nicolaus, who subscribed the letter to Emperor Leo in458 ; and Stephanus, who attended the Council of Nicaea in787 . The "Synecdemus " of Hierocles and most "Notitiae Episcopatuum ", as late as the 12th or13th century , place it inLycia , as a suffragan of Myra.Kaunos remains a
