Poseidon Linux is an operating system, originally based on Kurumin Linux, now based on Ubuntu (8.04 LTS). It is developed and maintained by a team of young scientists from the Rio Grande Federal University Foundation [http://www.furg.br/] in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (check http://poseidon.furg.br).

The name ("Poseidon" was the "god of the sea" in Greek mythology) derives from the large number of oceanologists involved in the development of the system.

It contains many free software programs used by scientists, such as the Fortran programming language, Kile and Lyx for scientific writing, numerical modeling, 2D/3D/4D visualization, statistics, and several tools that support GIS and mapping, along with day-by-day utilities like OpenOffice.org (with spell-checkers), multimedia, etc. (even some games) [http://www.poseidon.furg.br/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=21&Itemid=52] .

Due to its wide acceptance also outside the Portuguese-speaking scientific community and to the eventual shut down of the Kurumin project [http://www.guiadohardware.net/kurumin/] , the Poseidon project has changed the base distribution to Ubuntu, also to provide versions in Portuguese, Spanish, English and German.The core of Poseidon is always Debian due to the higher stability and great amount of software available into the repository sites.

The current running version is 3.0. It was pre-presented at the 9^th Free Software International Forum (2008) - "FISL9.0" [http://fisl.softwarelivre.org/9.0/www/] .
