Centre for Ecology and Hydrology

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is the United Kingdom's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in hydrology, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. As part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), it provides National Capability based on innovative, independent and interdisciplinary science and long-term environmental monitoring, forming an integral part of NERC's vision and strategy.

Working in partnership with the research community, policy-makers, industry and society, CEH delivers world-class solutions[clarification needed] to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind.

CEH is a member of PEER (the Partnership for European Environmental Research).

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is one of four environmental research organisations wholly owned by NERC, along with the British Geological Survey, the British Antarctic Survey and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory. The single organisation CEH was established in 1994 from the combination of four existing NERC research centres.

The Centre operates from four sites across the UK: Wallingford (headquarters), Edinburgh, Lancaster and Bangor. Scientific research is directed across these sites under three science programmes - water, biogeochemistry and biodiversity. The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology hosts the Environmental Information Data Centre, one of the Natural Environment Research Council's NERC_Data_Centres.
