Canadian French language cable television specialty channel that features cultural programming and is dedicated to the promotion of pluralism, diversity and dialogue. It first went to air onSeptember 1 ,1988 and is owned by a non-profit group: Le Consortium de télévision Québec Canada Inc. TV5 Canada has a partnership with the second-most widely distributed network in the world —TV5MONDE — which is available in over 203 countries reaching 164 million households worldwide. In Canada it has 6.3 million subscribers including 4.1 million outside ofQuebec as a result of TV5 being included in many basic cable packages across Canada.TV5 was founded by five French language networks in Europe with the aim of broadcasting French language programming to the world. The success of the network is based on a vast partnership that spans the globe. In Canada,
Radio-Canada ,Télé-Québec andTFO are the participants involved; International partners include:France 2 ,France 3 andFrance 5 (public networks of France),ARTE France,RTBF (French public broadcaster in Belgium), TSR (French public broadcaster in Switzerland), RFO andCIRTEF (Council representing French-speaking Africa).TV5 broadcasts a mix of the best French-language programming from France, French-speaking Africa and original Canadian productions. It devotes 15% of its schedule to Canadian programs and airs a minimum of 104 hours of local content each year. Its programming is diverse and covers many different genres such as information, entertainment, sports, documentaries, fiction and local content about Canadian Francophones. TV5 also features six daily newscasts from Canada and around the world.
