D. G. Astley

D. G. Astley

Major D. G. Astley is an Irish curler. He is generally believed to be the only person in an Olympic Games to win two medals in the same event for two different nations.

Astley was a winner of the curling gold medal in the 1924 Winter Olympics for Great Britain. Astley also played a match for Sweden and when Sweden won the silver medal, he was naturally awarded one. Until recently curling in the 1924 Winter Olympics was thought to be a demonstration sport (i.e. not eligible for medals) but recent historical research led the IOC to declare that this was not the case unlike the subsequent 1928 Winter Olympics.
