Littlethorpe

Littlethorpe

Littlethorpe is a small village approximately 6 miles south of Leicester, separated from the village of Narborough by the Leicester to Birmingham railway line.

The village has expanded over the past 40 years, most noticeably through the creation of two housing estates, the Jelson estate and Barratt estate. Housing continues to be erected, with Parnell Close being completed during 2005.

Services

The village benefits from two pubs, despite its size; The Plough Inn and the [http://oldinnlittlethorpe.co.uk/ Old Inn] . Both have a variety of clubs, including skittles, chess, dominoes, football and darts. Both pubs compete in the tug-of-war which is held annually at the gala.

Other services include a village store, garden centre and Heighton's Funeral Directors. Previously a hardware shop was situated on Cosby Road next to the village store, however a fire led to its demolition after closure. This land is now being re-developed.

Littlethorpe Chess Club

[http://www.littlethorpechess.co.uk/ Littlethorpe Chess Club] is based at The Plough Inn, Station Road and is the largest chess club in Leicestershire. They are also the only club that plays its home matches in a pub. The club operates 11 teams in the Leicestershire league, 3 teams in the Coventry league and 1 team in the 4 Nations Chess League. Club members range in age from 10 - 70+ whilst the club welcomes new players of all ages and standards.

Littlethorpe Community Association

The Littlethorpe Community Association (LCA) meets in the skittle alley of one of the pubs. The Association organises the annual gala on Littlethorpe Park, as well as holding monthly coffee mornings at the village hall and operating the Santa Run each Christmas. More recently the association has organised Easter Egg Hunts and a Christmas decoration morning at the village hall.

The village has no church of its own, but is part of the parish of Narborough, along with Huncote. Previously Littlethorpe was part of Cosby parish.

Twinning

The village, along with Narborough, shares its twinning with the village of Genappe in Belgium. Visits continue to take place, and in 2005 a football match was held between Genappe and local team, Narborough & Littlethorpe.
