Japanese gunboat Akagi

"Akagi" (赤城) was a Japanese gunboat that saw service as a dispatch vessel in Admiral Itoh Sukeyuki's fleet at the Battle of Yalu River in 1894.

"Akagi" was laid down by builder Onohama of Kobe in June 1886, launched in August 1888, and completed in July 1890. "Akagi" was one of four vessels of the "Maya" class of gunboats. After serving in the Japanese fleet, "Akagi" was sold in 1912.

Armament was four convert|120|mm|adj=on and four convert|4.7|mm|adj=on guns. "Akagi" carried convert|74.4|LT|lk=on of coal, had a maximum speed of around convert|10|kn and displaced convert|612|LT normal. The vessel was convert|135|ft|m|0 from perpendicular to perpendicular in length, with a beam of convert|22|ft|m|0 and draught of convert|8|ft|6|in.

"Akagi" was resold to Amagasaki Steamship Company in 1928, and used as a merchant cargo ship until 1953.
