Boğazkale

Boğazkale

Boğazkale is a district of Çorum Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It is located at 87 km from the city of Çorum. Population of the town is about 2,000.

Boğazkale is the site of the ancient Hittite city of Hattusa.

Formerly known as Boğazköy, this small town (basically one street of shops) sits in a rural area on the road from Çorum to Yozgat. Boğazkale is best known as the site of Hattusa and Yazılıkaya and the area attracts visitors in the summer and there are restaurants near the historical sites, and stalls selling local handicrafts.

Hattusa

The Hittites in this area built one of the earliest settlements in history, spoke an Indo-European tongue and formulated trade links with the Ancient Egyptians. This is obviously a history of great importance and since the beginning of the 20th century modern archaeologists (currently the German Institute of Archaeology) have been excavating the Hattusa and Yazılıkaya sites, and have discovered a rich array of cuneiform inscribed tablets, along with architectural remains of temples, gateways, cemeteries and other buildings. Because of its rich historic and architectural heritage, Boğazkale is a member of the Norwich-based European Association of Historic Towns and Regions (EAHTR).
