Wayne Hammond (field hockey)

Wayne Hammond (born September 5, 1948) is a retired field hockey player from Australia, who was a member of the Men's National Team that won the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal, Canada.

Hammond represented his native country from 1972 until 1980. He toured some twenty countries in that period, earning a total number of 88 caps for "The Kookaburras" in test series, and international and Hockey World Cup tournaments.

Hammond first represented Australia in 1972 competing in a three match test series in New Zealand, and later that year helped Australia to fifth place at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. But he was lucky to get there after fulfilling his obligation in the last intake for National Service in 1969. A move to Singleton and later Puckapunyal restricted him training, and it wasn't until he was transferred back to Canungra Army Base in 1970 that he began to play hockey once again.

The army supported his dedication to make it to the top of his sport, allowing him time to travel to Brisbane on a daily basis to train. Their efforts were repaid when he was selected in the Queensland team to tour New Zealand in 1971, beginning a period of twelve years state, and eight years national representation.
