ΝΑΦ (Nu Alpha Phi, also known as NAPhi, Nappies) is an Asian-Interest fraternity based in the eastern United States. Nu Alpha Phi is based around seven fundamental principles (Brotherhood, Discipline, Leadership, Pride, Professionalism, Service, and Unity), which members use as stepping stones to personal growth.

Mission statement

The fraternity professes to create a bond of brotherhood passed down from generation to generation, including lasting relationships between alumni and currently active members.

Externally, it seeks to promote Asian-awareness, as well as to serve as a liaison between the Greek community and the Asian community. This is done through a supportive network of alumni and matriculated brothers who actively engage in participation in community service, cultural workshops and events, university programs, and various other on-campus student activities. Additionally, the fraternity strives to work with various other Asian Greek organizations in an effort to bring unity and recognition to the Asian-American community.

Internally, the fraternity emphasizes brotherhood and promotion of self-development for all of its members, as encouraged by its seven fundamental principles of brotherhood, discipline, leadership, pride, professionalism, service, and unity. Members are taught to use these principles in everyday life to promote personal growth. These ideals are brought upon prospective members, as well.

Additionally, the fraternity promotes brotherhood through events such as alumni networking, job banks, sports competitions, and road trips. The fraternity actively seeks to integrate its members into the local community through social events, on-campus performances, and participation in various cultural organizations.

Although the fraternity asserts itself as an Asian-interest organization, it openly welcomes members from any ethnicity or cultural background, and its membership has continued to increase in diversity over the years.

History

In the spring of 1994, eight students at the State University of New York at Albany gathered to discuss the issue of establishing a strong Asian-interest organization on campus. The men aimed at tackling a number of goals, namely spreading Asian-awareness on the university campus and building a strong bond of brotherhood between the individuals.

Founding Fathers

  • Sean Chao
  • Lok Man Kwong
  • Henry Ngan
  • Tai Nham
  • Eric Peng
  • Alan Sun
  • Bill Tong
  • Albert Yip

These eight men elected amongst themselves one man, Albert Yip, to be the primary founding father, and on March 18, 1994, Nu Alpha Phi was founded. Together, these eight men persevered to create the fundamental learning process that is still used to this day for all prospective members. The major intent of the process was to instill the seven principles of brotherhood, discipline, leadership, pride, professionalism, service, and unity into members' everyday lives. The founding fathers' belief was that it was through this process that they proved to one another – as well as to future members – that their bond would withstand any hardship.

In the summer of 1996, Nu Alpha Phi was officially incorporated. As such, it assumed the legitimate body of a national corporation.

Nu Alpha Phi's expansion has resulted in the existence of eight establishments and continued growth is projected for the future.

National Events

In addition to local affairs, the fraternity seeks to promote itself both internally and externally through a variety of national events.

National Meeting
Members of each chapter gather to discuss the general welfare of the fraternity multiple times throughout the year. Issues deemed essential to the organization are brought up, such as future plans and the status of each chapter's growth.

"Chapter Wars"
Each summer, members of all chapters gather in New York City to participate in a variety of competitive events, including eating contests, relay races, football, basketball, and softball. The intent of this event is to further increase relations between members of different chapters through friendly competition, as well as to allow both active members and alumni a medium of social interaction over the summer.

National Semi-Formal
In June, the fraternity holds its national semi-formal. The semi-formal is designed as a way for members to interact in a more formal, yet relaxing atmosphere. It is also here where achievement awards are given to members and entire chapters, including the Establishment of the Year award. This award was instituted in 2003.

National Mixers
In addition to holding internal events on a national level, the fraternity also holds social events with nationally-recognized sororities. These events further integrate members into their communities, and they provide a medium for meeting new people from various locations across the country.

World of Dance New York
The fraternity hosts a yearly dance festival with World of Dance Tour, Inc. in the New York City area. The events boast thousands of attendees and over fifty crews from around the globe. Guest performers at World of Dance events in the past have included Jabbawockeez, Super Cr3w, Quest Crew, Poreotics, Kaba Modern, Future Funk, Chi Town's Finest Breakers and Mos Wanted Crew.
