Mad Dog is a nickname. One of the earlist documented references for the term is in 1577 to refer to a strong ale called Madde Dogge. By 1818 it referred to the plant mad-dog skullcap, a supposed cure for hydrophobia. ["mad dog, n."; Oxford English Dictionary]
