Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is located in East Orange and Newark, New Jersey. The Garden State Parkway runs through the two halves of the cemetery (Exit 144 and Exit 145, respectively). It has been a long-standing belief that cemetery plots were moved to make room when the Garden State Parkway was built, but it is not true. The Laurelton Road was in its place (before the Garden State Parkway was laid down) and no one was ever buried underneath the road. At one time, the cemetery only owned the land on one side of the road. After the Garden State Parkway was built, new land was purchased on the other side of the highway for more burial plots. This gave the appearance of the Garden State Parkway cutting through the cemetery and dividing it into two sections.
