Saddleworth Moor

Saddleworth Moor

Saddleworth Moor is an area of sparsley populated moorland and dark millstone grit scenery typical of the West Yorkshire and East Lancashire Pennine hills of northern England, between Holmfirth, West Yorkshire and Greenfield, Greater Manchester. Deep valleys cut into the landscape of Saddleworth Moor, facilitating road links between the cities and towns of the Manchester conurbation in the west, and Huddersfield, Kirklees and the cities of Bradford and Leeds in the east. Although the odd tourist source such as one cited here - and even certain other Wikipedia articles - state that the M62, Britain's highest motorway, crosses the Pennines at Saddleworth Moor, this is in fact not the case. This assumption probably results from "Saddleworth" appearing on motorway signage for junction 22, which is in fact at the meeting of Windy Hill and Rishworth/Moss Moors, 4 to 5 miles north-west of Saddleworth Moor. The administration of the area is split between the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham and the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in the Metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire respectively.

The moor became infamous as the burial site of a number of the victims of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. As a result, the crimes were dubbed the Moors Murders. The body of one of their victims, Keith Bennett, has never been found. Brady and Hindley said they buried him near a stream but did not know exactly where. [cite web

The Pennine Way arrives from the Wessenden valley to the north and crosses the moor on its ascent to Black Hill on Holme Moss to the south.

The A635, known locally as the Isle of Skye road, passes across the moor. It takes its name from a public house which was sited at Wessenden Head before it was demolished after a fire.
