Lorch is a town in Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated at the mouth of the Wisper and belongs to the Middle Rhine region. It is famous for its wine production and for its parish church St. Martin, dating from 1243, with its splendid wooden monochrome main altar, 1483.

Culturally and politically however the people of Lorch feel that they are part of the Hessian Rheingau, as the township of Lorchhausen is the most northern community in Hesse.

In the Middle Ages, Lorch served as the northern cornerstone of Mainz facing towards the Rheingau. Its position at the border was notable in the years after the First World War, when Lorch was the ‘capital’ of the Free State Bottleneck.
