Richibucto, New Brunswick (parish)

Richibucto, New Brunswick (parish)

Richibucto was established prior to the 1600s when it was noted as the major stronghold and meeting place of Mi'kmaq, the original inhabitants. Richibucto was occupied by Acadians in the early 1600s when a missionary school was established. The parish of Richibucto was developed by the English, Scots and Irish settlers.

It was originally a part of Northumberland County which included all of Kent County until 1814 when this area was subdivided into Wellington and Carleton Parish. These two parishes joined to form Kent County and Richibucto was included as a part of Carleton Parish. Richibucto was re-named Liverpool in 1826 and then changed back to Richibucto in 1832. Richibucto included parts of Weldford Parish until 1835 and a small portion of St. Louis Parish until 1855. It is not uncommon to hear Mi'kmaq, French, English and Chiac languages spoken in this region.
