Turing Award

Turing Award

The A. M. Turing Award is given annually by the Association for Computing Machinery to "an individual selected for contributions of a technical nature made to the computing community. The contributions should be of lasting and major technical importance to the computer field". Often recognized as the "Nobel Prize of computing", the award is named after Alan Mathison Turing, a British mathematician who is "frequently credited for being the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence". The first recipient, in 1966, was Alan Perlis, then of Carnegie Institute of Technology. Frances E. Allen of IBM, in 2006, is the only female recipient in the award's forty year history.cite press release|title=First Woman to Receive ACM Turing Award|publisher= The Association for Computing Machinery|url=http://campus.acm.org/public/pressroom/press_releases/2_2007/turing2006.cfm|date=February 21, 2007|accessdate=2007-11-05] [cite news|author=Marianne Kolbasuk McGee |title=There's Still A Shortage Of Women In Tech, First Female Turing Award Winner Warns|url=http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197008472|date=February 26, 2007, online February 24, 2007|work=InformationWeek|publisher=CMP Media|accessdate=2007-11-05] [cite news|author=Perelman, Deborah|title=Turing Award Anoints First Female Recipient|url=http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2098922,00.asp|date=February 27, 2007|work=eWEEK|publisher=Ziff Davis Enterprise|accessdate=2007-11-05]
