Garland V. Stewart Middle Magnet School

Garland V. Stewart Middle Magnet School, normally referred to as "Stewart", opened as Don Thompson Vocational High School in 1945 on West Spruce Street in Tampa, Florida, USA. The building later housed Blake High School before becoming Stewart. The school is named in honor of Garland V. Stewart, the first African American to serve as Assistant Superintendent for the School District of Hillsborough County. Stewart has 950 students in grades 6-8.

*Stewart is a NASA Explorer School, one of only 50 in the United States, and only two in Florida. [ [http://explorerschools.nasa.gov/portal/site/nes/menuitem.46f3ebc1afcf13bd78441770621a5ea0/ Combined Nasa Explorer School Teams] ] The school receives over $3000 in grant money each year from NASA, along with visits and video conferences with NASA engineers. NASA provides summer workshops for Stewart's teachers.

*Project Lead The Way is a pre-engineering program that allows students to use advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Drafting) software and a woodshop. These students are picked based on Math and Science Teacher recommendations.

*John Glenn Top Gun Academy is a club for all grades that caters to advanced aerospace-interested students. The club's members take an annual trip to the Kennedy Space Center, paid for by donors such as Brighthouse Networks and KB Home.

*Wheelbrator is an environmental studies club. The club takes full advantage of Stewart's prime position on the Hillsborough River.

*National Junior Honor Society

*Young Eagles Stewart shares a special relationship with the Tampa chapter of the Young Eagles Association. The Young Eagles group provides opportunities for Stewart Students to ride in small aircraft. One Stewart Teacher owns his own airplane and participates in these activities. Stewart is located on the Hillsborough river, by Blake High School.

Other programs

Stewart has a full band and orchestra program. There are nine computer labs to create a 2:1 student to computer ratio. Stewart also has a full-sized gym. The I Can Learn! labs teach Algebra 1 to seventh grade students on a computer system. Stewart Students participate in Math League, Math Counts, and Worlds Of Wisdom (geography/History Tournament) competitions.
