Greig City Academy, the successor of The School of St.David and St.Katharine, is a secondary school in the borough of Haringey. It was built under the Labour government's flagship 'City Academies' programme and opened in September 2002. The school had a history of neglect and had some of the improving GCSE results in the Hornsey area. Since becoming a City Academy the school's GCSE results have improved [ [http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2007-06-15a.128657.h&s=%22faith+schools%22#g128657.r0 Gcse: 15 Jun 2007: Written answers (TheyWorkForYou.com) ] ] significantly.

The Greig Trust and the Church of England sponsor the Academy. David Greig, a successful local businessman, founded the Trust in memory of his mother in 1949. The Trust was established to provide funds to assist with the education of Hornsey children in accordance with the Christian faith. The Greig Trust is fully supportive of the City Academy status and is contributing significantly to the programme of refurbishment and new building. The Church of England is also contributing a significant amount to the renewal of the facilities at Greig City Academy.

Controversy

Greig City Academy was criticised for attempting to play down the recent conviction of paedophile teacher Mr G Durant who was employed continuously at the school since 1977 and not 2004 as earlier claimed. Mr Durant, who was found with more than 123,000 pornographic images of children on his home computer, has pleaded guilty to 15 charges relating to making and possessing indecent images but not guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a child.Elwyn Durant, 52, of Hillfield Avenue, Hornsey, was charged with the indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 on or before January 2, 1986; in addition to 14 counts of making indecent images on or before September 7, 2004; and one count of possessing indecent images on or before September 7, 2004. One of the charges relates to a photograph depicting Durant with a child. He had faced 17 charges but a change to the indictment since the last time he appeared at court on April 5, meant that one of the charges of making an indecent photograph of a child was no longer included in the list. Durant had worked as a science teacher at the school since 1977 when it was known as St David and St Katharine. Source Kay Murray. Muswell Hill Times 8th June 2006.
