Robert James Crisp (28 May 1911 in Calcutta - now Kolkata, India3 March 1994 in Colchester, England) was a South African cricketer who played in 9 Tests from 1935 to 1936 before living for a while in England. He was also a tanker during World War Two, serving in 3 RTR (Royal Tank Regiment) later writing two books documenting his experiences that became very famous; "The Gods Were Neutral" and"Brazen Chariots". These books covered his combat during the early part of the war, first during the British retreat in Greece, then the victory that followed in North Africa. He was awarded for his bravery during the North African campaign, and was also wounded while there, nearly dying several times from his wounds as well as the subsequent infection he suffered. Crisp was notable for his great height, over 6' 2", as well as a monstrous temper. After the war he travelled extensively, particularly in the South Seas.
