Christopher Nicholas Day (born 28 July 1975 in Walthamstow, London) is an English professional football goalkeeper currently playing for League One side Stevenage.

Day started his career at Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent five years, making one Premier League appearance for the North London side. He joined Crystal Palace for a fee of £225,000 in July 1996, whom he played regularly for throughout the 1996–97 season. The following season Day signed for Watford, but only played twice in two seasons at the club. However, during the 1999–2000 season, he made 11 appearances for the club in the Premier League. He spent a further season at the club, before joining Lincoln City on a three month deal in December 2000. On return to his parent club, he was released, and later joined Queens Park Rangers, spending three and a half years at the club – whilst also having brief spells on loan at Aylesbury United and Preston North End respectively.

He left QPR in 2005, and signed for Oldham Athletic ahead of the 2005–06 season. He played for the club for a season before joining Millwall in the summer of 2006. After two seasons with Millwall, Day signed for his local club, Stevenage, on a free transfer in August 2008. He was part of the club's successful FA Trophy campaign during the 2008–09 season, as well as playing an instrumental role in the Hertfordshire club earning promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history the following season. During the 2010–11 season, Day helped guide the club to back-to-back promotions following their sixth place finish and subsequent League Two play-off victory in May 2011. Day has also represented the England U21 squad five times between 1994 and 1996.

Club career

Early career

Born in Walthamstow, London, Day started his career at Tottenham Hotspur as a trainee and progressed through the youth system at the North London club.[3] Day was named as second choice goalkeeper on more than one occasion during his time at Tottenham, but only made one league appearance during his four-year tenure at the club.[4] Shortly before his 21st birthday, Day joined Crystal Palace in a deal worth £225,000.[5] He made 26 appearances for the Eagles during the 1996–97 season, making his debut in a 1–0 defeat against Birmingham City at St Andrew's.[6] However, he was dropped after a poor performance in a 2–1 defeat at Southend United,[7] and was subsequently considered second choice, behind Carlo Nash.

Watford

In the summer of 1997, Day joined Watford after just one season at Selhurst Park. He was part of the deal that saw Kevin Miller move to Palace.[8] He made his Watford debut in a 4–0 League Cup defeat away to Sheffield United, scoring an own-goal in the first-half.[9] He only made one further appearance for Watford during the 1997–98 season, a 1–0 defeat away to Fulham in the Football League Trophy.[10] The following season, Day did not feature at all for Graham Taylor's side in Watford's 1998–99 play-off winning season,[11] but won a medal as an unused substitute in the final.[12]

During the 1999–00 season, Day featured 11 times for the club in the Premiership.[13] He started in the club's first fixture in the top flight against Wimbledon,[14] as well as keeping a clean sheet in the club's shock 1–0 victory at Liverpool's Anfield.[15] He played his last game for Watford in a 1–0 victory over Coventry City in May 2000,[16] as the signing of Espen Baardsen in the summer of 2000 meant Day became third-choice goalkeeper. Mid-way through the 2000–01 season, Day joined Lincoln City on loan for three months.[17] He made his Lincoln debut in a 1–1 draw at home to Rochdale,[18] whilst making a further thirteen appearances for the Lincolnshire outfit.[19]

Queens Park Rangers

In the summer of 2001, Day joined Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer, following his release from Watford.[20] He made his QPR debut in a 1–0 victory over Stoke City in August 2001.[21] He made 19 more appearances during the 2001–02 season,[22] despite being dropped in October 2001 due to the arrival of Fraser Digby. Shortly after, Day suffered a broken leg in a home game against Oldham Athletic after a challenge with striker Matthew Tipton.[23][24] As part of his lengthy recovery plan, he was loaned to non-league Aylesbury United in October 2002,[25] and made his debut for the club in a 0–0 home draw against Harrow Borough.[26] He made a total of seven appearances for Aylesbury, playing his last game for the club in December 2002, a 1–1 draw away to Basingstoke Town.[27] Day returned to the QPR first–team towards the latter stages of the 2002–03 season. He played in goal for the rest of the season, and was part of the side that lost 1–0 in the play–off final to Cardiff City in the Millennium Stadium.[28]

The 2003–04 season witnessed Day feature a total of 34 times for QPR.[29] He was instrumental in the team's impressive defensive record during his six months in the first-team, keeping a total of 16 clean sheets from August to February; including five clean sheets in six games during November 2003.[30] However, he sustained an injury in February 2004, which saw Lee Camp come to Loftus Road on loan to cover his absence, and his impressive form kept Day out of the side when he returned. Day was an unused substitute in QPR's 3–1 win against Sheffield Wednesday that ultimately secured automatic promotion back to The Championship.[31] Day returned to the side for the club's return to the Championship during the 2004–05, featuring in 33 games for the west London based outfit.[32] He was dropped in January 2005 in favour of loanee Simon Royce, and was, as a result, allowed to move to Preston North End on a one-month loan deal.[33] He made his Preston debut in a 2–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest,[34] as well as making five more appearances for the Lancashire side; keeping two clean sheets during his time at Deepdale.[35]

Oldham and Millwall

Although he played two more games for QPR on his return, Day was allowed to leave for Oldham Athletic a week before the start of the 2005–06 season.[36] He became the first-choice goalkeeper at Boundary Park, playing 36 games for the Latics.[37] During this time, he kept a total of ten clean sheets.[38] However, then manager Ronnie Moore took the opportunity to sign out of favour Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant on loan at the end of the January transfer window, and Day subsequently became second choice for the remainder of the season.[39] As a result of a lack of first-team appearances, Day left Oldham at the end of the season and opted to sign for Millwall in June 2006.[40] He made his Millwall debut in a 3–2 defeat to Cheltenham Town two weeks into the start of the new season,[41] and kept a clean sheet in the following game; a 0–0 draw with Blackpool.[42] However, Day only featured a total of seven times during Millwall's 2006–07 campaign,[43] six times in the league and one further appearance for Millwall in the Football League Trophy. The following campaign, Day regained his place as first-choice goalkeeper for the start of Millwall's league season; keeping two clean sheets in his first two games.[44][45] Overall, he made a further seven appearances during the club's 2007–08 campaign, and left the club in the summer.[46]

Stevenage

"I've got a close affinity with Stevenage. It's my hometown club, so to get promoted with them is fantastic. To finish as champions over a long, difficult season is brilliant."

Chris Day, on Stevenage securing promotion to the Football League in April 2010.[47]

In August 2008, Day signed for Conference National side Stevenage on a two-year deal.[48] At the time of Day joining Stevenage, the club were struggling for form and sitting second bottom of the Conference National table having conceded 13 goals in 4 games.[49] Day made his debut for the Hertfordshire side in a 1–1 draw at home to Crawley Town.[50] The arrival of Day witnessed an upturn in form in not only the defensive unit, but also in the overall team as the club found some winning form in September 2008; with Day keeping clean sheets in games against Altrincham and Forest Green Rovers.[51][52] The team surged up the table, and Day was an instrumental part of the side that stayed unbeaten for 24 games from December 2008 to April 2009.[53] Despite making the play-offs, the club lost in the semi-finals against Cambridge United.[54] Day was a permanent fixture throughout Stevenage's 2008–09 season, making 52 appearances for the club and keeping a total of 20 clean sheets in all competitions.[55] Day also started in six of the club's successful FA Trophy campaign during that season, keeping four clean sheets and playing in the side's 2–0 win against York City in the final at Wembley Stadium.[56]

Day was again Stevenage's number one for the club's 2009–10 season campaign. He was instrumental in the side's form throughout September 2009; keeping clean sheets in games against Histon,[57] Eastbourne Borough,[58] and most notably in a 1–0 win against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road – a game in which he made a vital fingertip save to deny Luton Town a point in stoppage time.[59] The Stevenage defence continued to remain solid throughout the first half of the season; with Day and his back-line keeping four clean sheets in five games through November and early December 2009.[60][61][62] He made his 100th appearance for Stevenage in a 2–0 win over Forest Green Rovers.[63] Day was also between the sticks in Stevenage's 2–0 win against Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough in April 2010 – the game that ultimately secured Stevenage's promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history.[64] He also played in the club's last Conference National game of the season, a 1–0 win against York City – after the game the team were presented with their winners' medals and the competition trophy.[65] Day made 42 appearances during the club's successful league campaign, keeping a total of 24 clean sheets; the most clean sheets in the league.[66] The club also boasted the best defensive record in the league, conceding just 24 goals all season.[67] Day made a total of 52 appearances during the season, exactly the same amount of games he played in the club's previous campaign.[68] Day signed a new two–year contract with the Hertfordshire club at the end of the season.

Day started in Stevenage's first ever Football League fixture, a 2–2 draw against Macclesfield Town.[69] Day helped Stevenage earn their first away point of the season in a 1–1 draw at Aldershot Town, saving Marvin Morgan's 86th minute penalty to keep the scores tied.[70] He made a number of crucial saves in Stevenage's 0–0 home draw with Torquay United on 18 September 2010, Stevenage's first clean sheet of the 2010–11 season.[71] Four days later, he helped the club secure their first away victory of the season, a 1–0 victory at former employers, Lincoln City.[72] Stevenage's tight defence had helped Stevenage earn one of the four play-off spots as a result of finishing in sixth place. He kept two clean sheets in Stevenage's games against Accrington Stanley in the play-off semi-finals, which Stevenage won by a 3–0 aggregate scoreline.[73][74] Stevenage earned promotion to League One after a 1–0 win against Torquay United at Old Trafford on 28 May 2011, with Day playing the whole game and keeping a clean sheet.[75] Similarly to the 2009–10 season, Stevenage's success was built on a tight defence, with the club conceding the fewest goals during the 2010–11 League Two season, keeping 19 clean sheets during the campaign.[76] Day played in every single one of Stevenage's 56 games during the 2010–11 season, playing every minute of every game.[77]

Ahead of the 2011–12 season, Day dislocated his finger in Stevenage's pre-season victory over a Fulham XI side.[78][79] He was subsequently ruled out of first-team action for a month, missing Stevenage's first three games of the season.[80] Day made his first appearance of the campaign on 16 August 2011, playing the whole game in Stevenage's first win of season, a 3–1 away victory at Bournemouth.[81] Three days later, Day signed a contract extension with the club.[82]

Personal life

He was married in Stevenage in June 2004.[83] Day, along with his wife, previously owned a pub in Stevenage, located just over a mile away from Broadhall Way.[84] He is a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.[84]
