History

The airport first opened on October 21, 1967 as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport. In 1998, coinciding with the opening of a new terminal building, it was renamed Sacramento International Airport; though it didn't receive its first international flights until 2002 when Mexicana initiated nonstop service to Guadalajara.
