Goldenacre

Location

Goldenacre is an area in Edinburgh, Scotland, lying on and to the south of the Ferry Road, and south of Trinity.

Transport Links

The area is well-served for local transport, with no fewer than six bus services provided by Lothian Buses. Destinations include the City Centre, the shopping centre at South Gyle and the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at Little France.

Demographics and Facilities

The area is considered to be broadly affluent, and is mostly residential with some commercial activity, such as a local Post Office. There are also branches of several banks, a newsagent, a fishmonger, a dispensing chemist and two off-licences. There are at least three sheltered housing communities. It is the home of a small stadium, located within the Goldenacre Playing Fields, which has played a historic role in the development of Scottish rugby union. The Playing Field belongs to George Heriot's School, and encompasses field hockey pitches, rugby pitches, cricket nets and a fenced, floodlit court used for tennis and football, amongst other activities. There is a local bowling club, Goldenacre Bowling Club Ltd, and the neighbouring district of Inverleith is home to the Royal Botanic Garden, only a few minutes walk from Goldenacre. There is currently construction on-going in the heart of Goldenacre on the corner of the Ferry Road and South Trinity Road. It is still in the early stages, but will ultimately consist of the creation of new residential housing.

Wildlife

Wood pigeons, seagulls and many other birds are frequently evident. A red fox can often be spotted making its way between the current building site, the Rose Park cul-de-sac and the Ferry Road cyclepath, especially (though not exclusively) in the early morning hours. During this latter period it is frequently possible to hear the fox and its young at play. Finally, a badger is occasionally to be seen crossing Inverleith Row at the Playing Fields before or after making its way along Inverleith Place Lane.
