"The Lazarus Effect" (1983) is the third science fiction novel set in the by the American author Frank Herbert and poet Bill Ransom. It takes place some time after the events in "The Jesus Incident".

Plot summary

"The Lazarus Effect" continues the story of the planet Pandora that began in "The Jesus Incident". The sentient kelp is extinct, Ship is gone, there is no more dry land, the majority of humanity is heavily mutated from the genetic experiments performed by Jesus Lewis, and a power hungry mad man is attempting to control the planet. Fortunately the kelp is returning and this time Avata doesn't remain passive while people refuse to Worship.

Major themes

The book deals with concepts such as Artificial Intelligence, worship and the inherent problems of totalitarianism. It also addresses the issues of Clones, genetic engineering and racism.
