Honorary authorship

Honorary authorship

Honorary authorship is a term used in academic publishing for the routine listing of an administrator, such as a laboratory head or department chair, as a co-author of all research papers emanating from a given laboratory or department, regardless of whether that administrator has met the generally acknowledged criteria for authorship. There is a growing tendency to discourage "honorary authorship" and list only authors who have substantially contributed to the paper.
