Covered

Covered

Covered is a term used in popular music in general to refer to a song recorded by (a) different performer(s) from its original or most popular recorded version, and by some disc jockeys in particular to describe a musical recording presented under the guise of a false title and artist name. "Covering" a record in this case is usually the work of a DJ associated with the "rare Soul" or "Northern soul" genre of music in 45rpm vinyl record format.

When a DJ discovers an obscure track and plays it under an alias or cover name, any subsequent popularity on dance floors is more likely to be credited to him or her. Subsequently an accumulated stock of the track can be sold by the DJ with defaced label and reference stamps at a substantially higher price than the original records' previous, rarity-based value.
