The first Black Bison, also known as Bison-Black-as-Midnight-Sky, is a great shaman in his tribe and capable of amazing magical feats which benefit his people known as the Bison Cult. As an old man he lives with his great-grandson John Ravenhair, and resents his descendant's disrespect for their traditions. Bison-Black-as-Midnight-Sky is killed by muggers in Central Park, but not before binding his spirit to a magical amulet. After his death, the amulet allows him to possess the body of his descendant John Ravenhair. He first appears in "Fury of Firestorm" #1 (June 1982).

Black Bison II

John Ravenhair, a Native American born Black-Cloud-in-Morning, was raised in Queens, New York. As a young man, he grew ashamed of his heritage and legally changed his name. After his great-grandfather, the shaman Bison-Black-as-Midnight-Sky, dies in a mugging, the old man's spirit possesses Ravenhair, who adopts the identity of Black Bison. Black Bison sets about avenging the wrongs committed against the native American people. When removed from the angry spirit, Ravenhair occasionally acts for good, but is frequently a threat to Firestorm.Citation | last = Wallace | first = Dan | author-link = | contribution = Black Bison | editor-last = Dougall | editor-first = Alastair | title = The DC Comics Encyclopedia | pages = 49 | publisher = Dorling Kindersley | place = London | year = 2008 | ISBN = 0-7566-4119-5]
