Bryn Mawr Film Institute

The Bryn Mawr Film Institute is a non profit, community owned movie theater located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, a town on the Main Line. It opened in March 2005, with such dignitaries as Sir Ben Kingsley present. It currently has over 5,000 members. The Institute shows a wide range of films, including foreign films, independent films and art house films. The Institute works in conjunction with the Ambler Theater and the County Theater in Doylestown. All of the theaters are part of an effort to restore old theaters and bring exciting and rare films to their specific communities.

History of the Theater

The building began life as the Seville Theater. It was designed by Philadelphia architect William Harold Lee, a designer of over 200 theaters. The Seville was built in 1926—one of six theaters built along the Main Line in the 1920s. It was a one-screen theater (which later was split into two during the 1980s).

Future Goals

The Institute currently has plans to restore the skylit atrium to its original state, at a cost of $2 million. They also plan to add classroom space, a third screen, an elevator, and upgrades to the HVAC and other building systems.
