In Serbian, the city is known as "Požarevac" (Пожаревац), in Romanian as "Pojarevaţ" or "Podu Lung", in Turkish as "Pasarofça", in German as "Passarowitz", and in Hungarian as "Pozsarevác".
Its name means "fire-town" in Serbian.
History
It is historically known as the site of the signing the
Treaty of Passarowitz (1718) and, then known as Margus, for a treaty between theHun leaders Attila andBleda and theByzantine Empire (435 AD). Margus was sacked by the Huns in their invasion of the Eastern Roman Empire in 442.It is also where former President of Yugoslavia
