John Alban Edwards (born June 10 1938 in Columbus, Ohio) is a former American baseball catcher who played for the Cincinnati Reds (1961-67), St. Louis Cardinals (1968) and Houston Astros (1969-74).

He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Cincinnati Reds in 1959 and went on to help them win the National League Pennant during his rookie season in 1961.

He was voted to three National League All-Star teams in 1963, 1964 and 1965.

He won the National League Gold Glove Award at Catcher in 1963 and 1964.

On February 8, 1968 Edwards was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Pat Corrales and Jimy Williams. That year, as Tim McCarver's backup, he caught 54 games, one of which was Ray Washburn's no-hitter (September 18). During his one season with the Cardinals in 1968 he helped them to win the National League Pennant.

On October 11, 1968 he was traded with minor league player Tommy Smith to the Houston Astros for Dave Giusti and Dave Adlesh. After playing his first season for the Houston Astros in 1969 he finished 36th in voting for the National League MVP. He played in 151 Games, had 496 At Bats, 52 Runs, 115 Hits, 20 Doubles, 6 Triples, 6 Home Runs, 50 RBIs, 2 Stolen Bases, 53 Walks, .232 Batting Average, .306 On-base percentage, .333 Slugging Percentage, 165 Total Bases, 4 Sacrifice Hits, 4 Sacrifice Flies, 12 Intentional Walks, being Hit by a Pitch 2 times and Grounding into a Double Play 17 times.

In 14 seasons he played in 1,470 Games, had 4,577 At Bats, 430 Runs, 1,106 Hits, 202 Doubles, 32 Triples, 81 Home Runs, 524 RBI, 15 Stolen Bases, 465 Walks, 635 Strikeouts, a .242 Batting Average, .311 On-base percentage, .353 Slugging Percentage, 1,615 Total Bases, 31 Sacrifice Hits, 43 Sacrifice Flies, 118 Intentional Walks,

As of the end of the 2005 Major League Baseball season he ranked 75th on the All-Time Intentional Walks List.

He attended Ohio State University where he led the team in hits (24) in 1958 and was initiated into the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He was inducted into the Phi Kappa Tau Hall of Fame in August 2008. He was inducted into the Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2008.
