Sanjoy Bandopadhyay is a Hindustani classical
sitar player. He is Ustad Allauddin Khan Professor and Head at the [http://www.geocities.com/rbu_im Department of Instrumental Music] ofRabindra Bharati University ,Kolkata India .Bandopadhyay was first taught by his father Peeyush Prasanna Bandopadhyay, and went on to study with maestros such as
Radhika Mohan Maitra andBimalendu Mukherjee . He also had additional training from Manas Chakravarty, Ajay Sinha Roy and M. R. Gautam.He has performed in many major music festivals in India and in the European countries, Canada and in the USA. He is often invitated to important global events, like the 2003 plenary session of the
UNESCO conference in Finland. He has released a number of CDs on major labels both in India and the US. He has received invitation from theUniversity of Alberta ,Edmonton , Canada to visit their campus as an Distinguished India-Focus Visitor. He often takes part in international conferences on music and academics, and for example presented inSeptember, 2004 at the XIIIth International Conference of the German Musicological Society inWeimar . TheUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invited him as George A. Miller Visiting Professor inOctober 2005 . He is also involved in a number in collaborative research projects at the national and international levels.Bandopadhyay's musical style is sometimes characterised as post-modern, as a result of his training in several gharanas: Senia-Shahjehanpur, Imdadkhani and Rampur-Senia.
He is a pioneer in making available Indian music teaching available online in real-time.
