Red Smith Handicap

Red Smith Handicap

The Red Smith Handicap is an American turf race for thoroughbred horses open to three-year-olds and up and set at a distance of one and three-eighths miles. Run annually in November at Aqueduct Racetrackin Queens, New York City, it is a Grade II event and offers a purse of $150,000.

Until 1981, this race was known as "The Edgemere Handicap." It is now named the Red Smith in honor of the late Walter "Red" Smith, an honored and respected sports columnist for over 45 years who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1976.

The Edgemere Handicap was also the name of a mile and a furlong race on the main track last run in 1957.

The Red Smith was run at a mile and a sixteenth in 1977, at a mile and three sixteenths from 1963 to 1967, and a mile and a quarter from 1972 to 1976, as well as from 1978 to 1993. It was held in two divisions in 1977, 1983, and 1986, and not run at all in 1979. It raced once at Aqueduct Race Track in 1997.
