Fort Garry, Winnipeg

Fort Garry, Winnipeg

Fort Garry is a large area in the southern part of the Canadian city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In 1912 the R. M. of Fort Garry was incorporated. Formerly, it had been part of R. M. of St. Vital. In 1972, the R. M. of Fort Garry joined with the City of Winnipeg and eleven other suburban municipalities in Unicity.

It is primarily a middle class residential area and is very ethnically diverse. It includes the neighbourhoods of Beaumont, Wildwood Park, Point Road, Crescent Park, Chevrier, Whyte Ridge, Fort Richmond, Waverley Heights, Richmond West, and St. Norbert.

As it is separated from the rest of Fort Garry by the Perimeter Highway, and due to its large Francophone population and history as a separate community, St. Norbert is often not considered to be a part of Fort Garry.

Although some people think of Linden Woods as a part of Fort Garry, that neighbourhood actually lies within the borders of the former Town of Tuxedo.

The population has risen from 28,690 in 1971 to 54,060 as of the 2001 Census (Source: Statistics Canada), making Fort Garry the fastest growing part of the City of Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba's main campus is located in Fort Garry.
