South Yorkshire Police is the
Home Office policeforce responsible for policing South Yorkshirein England.
The force covers an area of approximately 1,554 square kilometres (approx. 600 square miles) which is made up of the county's three boroughs (
Barnsley, Doncasterand Rotherham), along with the City of Sheffield. The resident population is 1.2 million. The force is the thirteenth largest of the 44 forces in England, Wales & Northern Ireland.
Force headquarters is in Sheffield with the force being divided into four basic command units (BCUs): Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham & Sheffield.
The Chief Constable is
Meredydd Hughes, who was appointed in September 2004.
Police Authorityhas nine councillors (drawn from the metropolitan boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield), three justices of the peace, and five independent members.
The force was formed in 1974, as a merger of the previous
Sheffield and Rotherham Constabularyalong with part of the West Yorkshire Constabularyarea (to which Barnsley Borough Policeand Doncaster Borough Policehad been merged into on October 1, 1968).
The force helicopter Sierra Yankee 99 has been a feature in two television series,
Traffic Copsand more recently Sky Cops along with the roads policing unit.
