Macedon is a town in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 8,688 at the 2000 census. The town is named after the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon, the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

The Town of Macedon is in the southwest corner of Wayne County and contains a village named Macedon. The town is east of Rochester and west of Syracuse.

History

The town is part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The first settlers arrived in 1789.

Macedon was created from the Town of Palmyra in 1823. The opening of the Erie Canal (completed in 1825) made the communities of Waynesport and Macedon ports on the canal.

The Macedon Academy, opened in 1841, set a standard for excellence.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.9 square miles (100.6 km²), of which, 38.7 square miles (100.2 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (0.44%) is water.

The west town line is shared with Monroe County, and the south town line with Ontario County

North-south New York State Route 31F and New York State Route 350 intersect east-west New York State Route 31 at Macedon village.

Education

The only school's in Macedon are the Macedon Elementary School, which is part of the Palmyra-Macedon Central School District. And Gananda Central School District.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 8,688 people, 3,236 households, and 2,410 families residing in the town. The population density was 224.6 people per square mile (86.7/km²). There were 3,388 housing units at an average density of 87.6/sq mi (33.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.05% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.44% of the population.

There were 3,236 households out of which 40.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $48,640, and the median income for a family was $55,218. Males had a median income of $41,166 versus $28,924 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,810. About 6.3% of families and 6.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.0% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.

The town recently welcomed a new Lowe's, which in conjunction with the fairly new Wal-Mart Supercenter is expected to make the surrounding area more attractive to other businesses and developers.

*Huddle — A hamlet by the north town line on County Road 208.
*Macedon — The Village of Macedon, located in the south part of the town on NY-31 and the Erie Canal.
*Macedon Center — A hamlet northwest of Macedon village, located on NY-31F.
*North Macedon — A hamlet north of Macedon village on Route 31F.
*Walworth Station — A location by the junction of County Roads 208 and 209 in the east part of the town.
*Wayneport — A hamlet in the southeast part of the town is located on the Erie Canal and County Road 306. It was formerly called "West Macedon."
*Yellow Mills — A hamlet in the southeast part of the town, west of Village of Palmyra on NY-31.
