Tamo daleko

Tamo daleko

Tamo daleko (Serbian Cyrillic: Тамо далеко; English: "There, Far Away") is traditional Serbian song from World War I. It is considered by some the anthem of every Serb soldier that leaves his family and goes to fight for his country. The song is sung by a soldier on the island of Corfu, following the withdrawal of the Serbian Army through northern Albania after Serbia was overrun by the Central Powers. He sings of his village, the (now destroyed) church in which he married, and the disastrous retreat during which many of his comrades died of cold, hunger, and disease, not to mention bandit attacks. The sea around Corfu and nearby small island Vido is known to this day as the "Blue Tomb" because of several thousand soldiers, that died there of the consequences of the withdrawal, were buried in the sea since there was not enough space to bury all of them on land.

Tamo daleko is also one of the most beloved and nostalgic songs to Serbian immigrants who came to America after World War II as the song refers to the distance of the homeland. [ [http://www.everyculture.com/multi/Pa-Sp/Serbian-Americans.html Multicultural America - Serbian Americans] ]

Lyrics

The song has many versions, as it sprang up with no clear, single author.

Version 1

Version 2

Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je ljubav moja.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je ljubav moja.

O zar je morala doć', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'o u krvavi boj.

Tamo daleko, gde cveta limun žut,
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.

Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.

Bez otadžbine, na Krfu živeh ja,
i opet veselo kličem, živela Srbija!
i opet veselo kličem, ŽIVELA SRBIJA!

Version 3

O zar je morala doć', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'o u ljuti boj.

Tamo daleko, daleko kraj mora,
Tamo je selo moje,
Tamo je ljubav moja.

Bez otadžbine daleko, daleko živim ja,
i opet kličem burno, živela domovina!

O zar je morala doć', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'o u ljuti boj.

Tamo daleko, gde cveću nema kraj,
Tamo su najdraži moji,
Tamo je pravi raj.

Tamo daleko kraj Save, Save i Dunava,
Tamo je varoš moja,
Tamo je moj rodni kraj!
