Scream (formerly known as It's A Scream) is a brand of
pub chain in the UK. The pub chain began in October 1995. It is owned by Mitchells and Butlers, whose head office is inBirmingham . It is aimed at the student market, and Scream pubs are mostly found near to universities. In the late 1990s, the head office was at the "Friary" on "Friargate" inDerby , which also incorporates a separate nightclub. The head office moved to Birmingham around 2000. It claims to be 'the number one choice of students'. Its chief competitor is Varsity, owned by theBarracuda Group in Buckinghamshire, although Varsity has a more mainstream market - often concentrating on football matches on Sky and located closer to town centres.The original name came from the
1893 painting "The Scream ", by the Norwegian artistEdvard Munch , which is a popular poster image with many students. The painting was formerly shown on some pub signs of the former "It's A Scream" chain.In the last few years, Scream pubs have begun updating the brand to keep up with students needs and increasing competition. Gone is the bright yellow from outside. More comfortable seating areas have been introduced with 'snug' areas, to give them a more homely atmosphere. The pubs each have individual items, for example a giant monkey mural (Horn In Hand) or a talking moose's head (White Harte, Bristol) and their own sign relating to their name.
Yellow Card
Scream pubs have a
loyalty card scheme known as The Yellow Card. It is available to students annually for £1 and entitles them to discounts on selected food and drink. Graduates may also purchase a Gold Card for £5, which is valid for life.As of November 2006, however, selected Scream Pubs have been chosen to run a trial wherein Yellow Cards do not get the holder any discounts on drinks.Locations (November 2007)
